adidas Nations Day 3: USA Teams Reach the Title Game

Last night at the 2013 adidas Nations brought us the semi-final tournament as well as the Fellowship games between the four international teams that did not make the semi-finals. Team Africa took on USA 2014 Blue in the first semi-final. The Africans came out of the gate slow, possibly as a result of their bye earlier in the day. The USA team took an early 18-6 led ad held off several Africa comebacks that brought them within two points. The Americans had a seven-point lead after the third quarter and pulled away late for a 78-61 win. 6’10 Trey Lyles had his best game of the event with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting and six rebounds. He was helped by 17 points from 6’4 D’Angelo Russell and 11 points from 6’7 power forward Reid Travis. 6’8 Papa Sadia Diatte led Africa with 18 points while sweet-shooting 6’3 Sidy Ndir added 16. 6’8 Michael Nzei, the leading rebounder at the event, added another 11 boards and eight points.

Their opponent in the final tonight will be USA 2014 Red. They defeated USA 2015 Red easily 96-71. 6’8 Kevon Looney and 6’11 Jalil Okafor continued to dominate the boards, both scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Looney, the top shot blocker of the event added another three blocks. 6’7 Stanley Johnson from Mater Dei led the winners with 18 points while Justice Winslow added 14 points and eight rebounds. 6’6 Deron Davis led the 2015 Red with 16 points and eight rebounds.

In the Fellowship Games, Russia had no problem with the Philippines in an 85-54 win. 6’2 Mikhail Kulagin was all over the court scoring 22 points, grabbing 15 rebounds, dishing out nine assists and coming up with four steals. 6’7 power forward Stanislav Ilnitskiy added 20 points. Latin America edged Australia 60-59 helped by a 29-5 second quarter advantage. The Aussies fought back from the 39-21 halftime deficit but just came up short. Puerto Rican PG William Rodriguez hit four three-pointers to lead the winners with 16 points. 6’0 Australian guard Dejan Vasiljevic led his teams comeback hitting four three-pointers and scoring 22 points.

In the morning session, USA 2014 Blue made their way to the semi-finals with a 107-70 win over USA 2015 Red. 6’7 Daniel Hamilton led five teammates in double figures with 18 points. 6’7 Reid Travis was next with 17 points. 6’6 Jaylen Brown led 2015 Red with 16 points and eight rebounds.  USA 2014 Red also advanced with an 94-84 win over USA 2015 Blue. Okafor had 18 points and 12 rebounds while Craig Victor added 13 points and 12 boards.

Australia had no problem with the Philippines in their 93-71 win. 6’6 Keanu Pinder led the winners with 18 points and eight rebounds while 6’5 Jack McVeigh and Vasiljevic scored 17 points each.  Russia topped Latin America 52-41 behind 20 points from Kulagin.

The college players that impressed in scrimmages were (points totals are for two games) Russ Smith (Louisville, 41 points), Wayne Selden (Kansas, 29 points), Jamil Wilson (Marquette, 29 points), Perry Ellis (Kansas, 28 points), LeBryan Nash (Oklahoma State, 35 points) and Travis Wear (UCLA, 34 points). Cameron Ridley (Texas) pulled down 20 rebounds in one game.

Earlier in the evening a group of NBA players scrimmaged with a group of selected high schoolers. Aaron Afflalo, Austin Rivers, Jeff Teague and Iman Shumpert were among the NBA players participating.
